When it comes to your animal family members, most pet parents would do anything to help keep their βfur babiesβ safe and healthy. Since pets canβt tell us exactly how they are feeling, it can sometimes be hard to determine what they need. Before turning to prescription medications or treatments that may have undesirable side effects, some pet owners try CBD as a natural supplement to assist with pet discomfort and promote health.
Our pets have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that works in the same way that the human endocannabinoid system does. So, the same relief humans may enjoy from a CBD regimen, including reduced anxiety, reduced pain and inflammation, and fewer seizures, could also be experienced by dogs, cats and other creatures.

Potential Benefits of CBD for Pets
Prevention of Arthritis - CBD helps to reduce inflammation, and reduction of inflammation in joints can provide relief and prevention of the pains associated with arthritis.Β
Reduced Anxiety - Scientific studies have proven that properly supporting the endocannabinoid system results in a calming effect. This can be especially beneficial for dogs that suffer from separation anxiety or are easily startled by loud noises...or the mailman.
FewerΒ Seizures - Multiple studies have seen a correlation between use of CBD and a decrease in seizures for those that suffer them frequently.Β A study by Colorado State University geared specifically at pets showed 89 percent of dogs who received CBD in the clinical trial had a reduction in the frequency of seizures.
Pain Relief - Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD has the potential to help with a variety of different aches and pains in pets, including joint and back pain, pains related to disease, or even cancer pain.Β
Better Appetite/Nausea Relief - CBD has been known to help with reduced appetite in pets without any psychoactive effects, and even assist with nausea and vomiting discomfort.
Potential Side Effects of CBD for Pets
When used properly CBD is known to have few to no side effects, but possible side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, or a brief lightheadedness if a large dose is administered. Always follow proper dosing instructions provided on the productβs packaging.
What CBD is Right for my Pet?
According to the American Kennel Club, when choosing a CBD for your pet, make sure to look for the following:
- All-natural. Make sure your oil is certified free of pesticides, metals and solvents.
- Donβt price shop. The higher the quality and purity, the higher the cost. You donβt want to go for a cheaper option that could have toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals. Make sure your CBD oil is free of additives.
- Get the analysis. The manufacturer should provide a certificate that tells you the amount of CBD that is in the product. Many CBD products contain only small amounts of CBD. Youβll also want to make sure there is little or no THC in the product.
- Buy CBD as a liquid. You can buy dog treats containing CBD, but the best form to administer is an oil or tincture. This way, you can adjust your dogβs dose drop by drop.
