Can CBD gummies cause anxiety? We receive this question frequently from first-time users and people who struggle with anxiety in daily life or as a side effect from other medications.
It’s understandable; the last thing you want to do is take a gummy that’s meant to soothe your worries and accidentally make your anxiety worse instead. Plus, it’s completely reasonable to wonder how a new product will affect you, even if you’re not prone to anxious feelings.
So, does CBD cause anxiety? Thankfully, the short answer is no. But let’s examine this issue more deeply and figure out why it’s such a common misconception in the first place.

Can CBD make you anxious? Here’s what to know before taking your first gummy.

You’ve probably heard the horror stories about people eating marijuana gummies or THC gummies in Colorado and California and having horrible anxiety attacks as a side effect.

Marijuana use in general — not just gummies — has been known to provoke anxiety reactions in some users. This is especially true for users who are already prone to anxiety in their daily lives. Even people who use marijuana regularly may have a bad reaction every once in a while that leads to an anxiety attack.

Additionally, CBD gummies are often “full spectrum,” meaning they contain low levels of THC in the same proportion that naturally occurs in the hemp plant. This leads some people to think that CBD gummies and THC or marijuana gummies are all roughly the same thing, when this is absolutely not true.

Interestingly, the cannabis plant often contains varying levels of THC. Legally speaking, a hemp plant is a cannabis plant containing less than 0.3% THC, and a marijuana plant is a cannabis plant containing more than 0.3% THC. It’s the same plant, but that one variation can cause completely different effects. Also remember that some manufacturers infuse extra THC — 20% or more in some cases — into their gummies to intensify the “high” feelings users want from marijuana products.

This distinction is important, because it’s the THC content that makes users anxious, not the CBD. In fact, one of the main reasons people take CBD gummies is to relieve anxiety. So, as long as you’re taking a true CBD gummy with 0.3% THC or less, you shouldn’t experience any anxiety.

Even if you ate the full bag instead of a single dose of one or two gummies, the high levels of CBD would still probably counteract the THC you ingested and cancel out any anxious feelings. However, we absolutely don’t recommend trying this.

For best results, choose a full-spectrum CBD gummy, start with a conservative dosage according to the package label, and relax. The tension and worries will start to melt away once the CBD kicks in.

Butler Hemp Co. CBD products offer the anxiety relief you’re looking for.

Just one or two of our CBD gummies is enough to help you let go of your stress and tension. They’re so relaxing that many of our customers use them as a sleep aid.

However, if you’ve had a bad reaction to THC in the past or you’re nervous to try a full spectrum product, you might be interested in a CBD isolate instead. It’s a THC-free way to get your daily dose of anxiety-relieving CBD in an easy-to-use tincture. As a bonus, a CBD isolate is completely safe to use if you might have to face a drug test in the future. Strike another worry off the list!
